Commercial RPA platforms offer an integrated environment, support, and centralised management. A solution built on open-source components can provide greater control over the code and operations, but it requires your own infrastructure and expert administration. Compare the total costs and method of use, not only the licence price.
Common problem: only the licence price is compared
Price. Commercial platforms use different licensing metrics, and these can change. An open-source foundation may remove the fee for the framework itself, but you still pay for infrastructure, implementation, updates, oversight, and support.
Ownership and vendor dependence. Commercial platforms use proprietary formats, and their migration options vary. A solution in a standard programming language and an open repository generally provides greater portability, although you still depend on the selected libraries and architecture.
Data. Commercial platforms may offer both cloud and on-premises options. We can host an open-source robot in your environment, but the data flow also needs to be assessed according to the external services used.
Scope, control, and administration. A commercial platform may have an advantage in a large deployment where centralised management, roles, an overview of many runs, and contractual support are important.
How to choose based on scope and operating model
An open-source solution may make sense when you are automating specific processes, want to work with code in your own repository, and have operational capacity or a partner to provide it.

We are not dogmatic: if a commercial route suits you, we will say so. With a smaller number of processes, a more open foundation may be more economical, but the result depends on support, security, and operational requirements.
